Taxi Supplement Program
  Taxi
The Taxi Supplement Program enables the handyDART operator to book trips in taxis when the regular vehicle(s) is unavailable, either because of capacity issues or because the trip cannot be accommodated in a timely manner. In essence, the handyDART operator becomes one large regular client to the taxi company, while in turn the vehicles of the taxi company act like extra vehicles to the handyDART operator.

For instance, if a passenger requests a trip when the handyDART vehicle is unavailable, Taxi Supplement enables the handyDART dispatcher to relay the passenger's name, pickup and drop off details to a participating taxi company. The taxi company then slots that passenger into their bookings for the day and picks up and drops off the passenger at the assigned locations and times. There may be restrictions on the use of this service including requirements for ride sharing and budget limitations.

Taxi Saver Program
   Taxi
For those times when the handyDART system is unavailable, the Taxi Saver Program provides registered handyDART passengers (16 years and older) with subsidized taxi service, giving them the flexibility to coordinate their own trips.
Register with Vernon HandyDart by providing a picture for an identification card. The taxi coupons can now be purchased three months at a time. It now costs $40 to buy $80 worth of coupons (one month's allowance). Please make cheques payable to Farwest Coach Inc. (Farwest Coach Inc., 4210 – 24th Ave., Vernon, BC, V1T 1M2)
For additional information, see Vernon Regional Transit System Taxi Saver Program.

Wheel Chair Taxi (Vernon Taxi)
It is suggested that people call a day in advance to reserve a taxi if possible. Cost is slightly more than a regular taxi fare. The meter runs during drop-off or pick-up. Arrangements can be made for pick-up for social events in the evenings if calls made 2 days in advance and if there is an available driver. Taxi Savers are accepted for Wheel Chair Taxi fares.

Volunteer Drivers
The Seniors Information & Resource Bureau requires a constant source of volunteer drivers who can be available to assist the growing number of seniors who lack the resources or means to attend appointments, events or shopping in the community.

To become a volunteer driver, please contact the Seniors Information & Resource Bureau at
250 545-8572. After a criminal record check and providing a driver abstract, volunteer drivers can then offer their services at their own convenience.

Accessible Transit Attendant (ATA)
   Attendant
An ATA is a person who travels with a transit passenger to enable that passenger to use public transit. An ATA assists the passenger by on and off the bus and helps secure their chair or scooter. The ATA does not pay a fare, but must get off at the same stop as the passenger.

Boarding the Bus
If using a walker, wheelchair or scooter, request the operator to kneel the bus or lower the ramp. You may board only at designated stops, via the front door of the bus. Have your fare ready when you board the bus, and swipe your bus pass or display the Day Pass to the operator. Ask the operator if you are not sure this is the correct bus or torequest a callout of a specific stop.

Getting off the Bus   Bus
Exit by the rear door when possible. If you use a walker, wheelchair or scooter, request the operator to kneel or lower the ramp. After leaving the bus, wait until the bus pulls away and you have a clear view of any oncoming traffic before you cross the street. To get off the bus in rural areas with no designated bus stops, ask the driver to find a safe place to stop.

Priority Seating
The priority seating up front on the bus is designated for people with disabilities, passengers with children in strollers and seniors—in that order. Please respect the priority seating designations, and be prepared to move if the driver asks you to.
