  • Fitness Programs for Older Adults in Vernon (81Kb, PDF)

  • Good Food Box - a volunteer, nonprofit, produce-buying fruit and vegetable cooperative for hundreds of families in the North Okanagan, offering high quality produce monthly for about half the retail cost. Supported in 2008 by the Food Action Society of the North Okanagan.

  • Safeway Shopping Service for seniors, shut-ins, and those needing temporary help with grocery shopping, including people recently discharged from hospital. Free delivery on orders over $30. Call 250-542-5328 or 250-545-2978 Tuesdays, between 8 am and 10:30 am.

  • Nurse Next Door - A team of caregivers dedicated to delivering individualized, caring, high quality homecare services to the community, from companionship and homemaking to 24-hour nursing care.   • Good Morning Program (offered by P.I.N. Crisis Line) is a phone call for seniors who live alone in the community of Vernon, wishing to have a daily safety check or a contact for some added support. People with high physical health risks may also use this service. The program is free of charge.

  • Chronic Pain Self-Management Program from University of Victoria Centre on Aging - Interior Health Region Workshops are being offered in the Vernon, Enderby and Armstrong areas. A FREE 6-session program (2-1/2 hrs a week for six consecutive weeks). Learn strategies and techniques to manage chronic pain. Dates and locations of 2009 Fall Workshops.   • Caregivers Association of BC (CABC) 'Helping Caregivers Meet Their Needs' since 1993. Dedicated to caregivers in BC. Online support group.

  • Caregiving: A Shared Journey. This Ministry of Health website provides a range of resources that offer practical assistance as well as personal supports for caregivers and care recipients.

  • Heart & Stroke Patient/Survivor/Caregiver Message Board. Unites patients, survivors and caregivers throughout British Columbia where they can exchange tips as well as stories and personal patient or caregiver experiences. Free.

  • We Rage, We Weep Alzheimer Foundation - The Foundation’s primary focus is to help those with Alzheimer Disease or related dementia and their caregivers stay together and in their own private residence as long as possible. Grant funding may be given to caregivers who experience significant economic hardship in their caregiving role.

  • Council of Senior Citizens Organizations of BC (COSCO). COSCO is an umbrella organization made up of 75+ seniors' organizations as well as a significant number of individual associate members. Its purpose is to advance the social and physical welfare of all elder citizens in the province of BC, and it advocates for seniors at all government levels.
    • The COSCO Conference on Seniors Health, Housing, and Income September 15-16, 2008 has concluded and the conference papers are available here.

  • BC Old Age Pensioners Organization promotes all matters pertaining to the welfare of the elder citizens of BC. It presents resolutions to various levels of government and its agencies on issues that have been voted on and passed by members at the annual convention. 250 292-8209

  • CARP - A New Vision of Aging for Canada. The Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP) is a non-profit organization that does not receive government operating funding in order to maintain its independence. CARP's mandate is to promote and protect the rights and quality of life for older Canadians.

  • Tyze - a new online personal networking service that makes it easy to reach out to friends, family, neighbours and caregivers.


Postbox / mail GOVERNMENTS (Federal, Provincial, Municipal)

  • Interior Health has established a central Patient Care Quality Office to receive, record, track and resolve complaints through Health Service Area Patient Care Quality Officers. The Patient Care Quality Officer is the liaison between patients, clients, residents and Interior Health regarding concerns, complaints or unmet needs.   • HEALTHLINK BC - New 811 Service
    British Columbians can now dial 811 to get non-emergency health information, medical advice and help navigating BC's health-care system. The HealthLink BC service includes a new health system navigation service that is accessible via telephone (dial 811) or the Internet (HealthLink BC).

  • BC Senior’s Line: 1 800 465-4911
    The BC Seniors’ Line assists British Columbians in accessing the network of provincial services including Senior’s Supplement and SAFER Program. This toll free 1-800 telephone line offers seniors a single source of information about government services, including information about health services. Telephone agents can answer individual questions about seniors’ services provided by federal and provincial ministries and agencies.

    The information line is available Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

  • BC Seniors Guide Directory - This is an online guide provided by the B.C. Ministry of Healthy Living and Sport. A copy of this Directory may be obtained from the Seniors Bureau (subject to availability).

  • BC Nurse Line: Toll free 1 866 215-4700 (This number is still active but you can access the same information by dialing 811, the new service listed above)

  • Active Aging in British Columbia: (Draft) Case Studies of Community Actions. Final approved report available in January 2009.

  • 1 800 O-Canada is the primary telephone access point for up-to-date information on Government of Canada programs and services

  • Free Drop In Legal Clinic Room #303, the People Place, 3402-27th Ave., Vernon, on the second Thursday of each month, except August, 7 pm to 9 pm. Phone Colleen at 250 542-3322 for an appointment. Open to everyone, regardless of financial circumstances. Volunteer lawyers provide up to 15 minutes of basic advice on legal issues. Sessions are confidential and protected by solicitor/client privilege.
