Falls Prevention

Home Safety ChecksHouse / Checkmark

Check MarkHome Safety Checks are a free in-home service provided to seniors within the Greater Vernon Area.

The Home Safety Check Program was developed in Vernon, British Columbia as one component of a larger Falls Prevention Program (North Okanagan Falls Prevention Project). The aim of the Home Safety Check (HSC) Program is to provide falls prevention information, support and follow-up to seniors living in the community. It is designed to enable and empower seniors to overcome barriers and make changes in their homes that will reduce their risk of having a fall.

The Home Safety Check Program is an innovative approach to falls prevention and is most effective when it is part of a comprehensive falls prevention program. Participants are referred to the program through self-referral or by local health care professionals. Pre-arranged visits are made to the homes of seniors by trained volunteers who are also seniors with the purpose of identifying risks that may exist that would cause falls.

Participants are contacted after the initial home check is completed, several times if necessary, so that they are supported in implementing the recommendations made by the home safety check volunteers thereby reducing the risks of falling.
